This week I was fortunate to take yet another business through an EOS Focus Day. It’s the first step in the EOS process & it can be quite a challenging day.
The challenge is that every business hits the ceiling at some point & to break through this you have to make changes. This can be confronting when you have always done things in a certain way & you are being challenged to change this.
My colleague Dan Williams, covers this perfectly in his latest LinkedIn article – “We need friction to move forward.”
So how do we do this as Business Owners?
There was a study published in the 1970’s titled “Evolution and Revolution as Businesses Grow”, which found that businesses do not grow in a perfectly straight line. It’s more as series of peaks, like mountains that we have to climb over before we get the nest growth spurt.
The unfortunate statistic is that 50% of businesses that hit the ceiling close their doors or their growth remains flat. Some businesses maintain a stagnant life while most others struggle to survive until their leaders burnout and call it quits. Only a select few break through the revolutionary period (i.e., the ceiling) and elevate their organization to the next level. Of those that break through the ceiling and grow to the next level, the cycle repeats roughly every five years.
So we need a way as leaders to change, to lead & parent our organisation through these cycles – and that comes through adopting the 5 Leadership abilities, that are covered in this week’s EOS blog:

Use your brain’s delete button
Ok, so it doesn’t magically make difficult customers or nightmare family issues disappear but it can help you to get what you want & make learning easier.
This article from Fast Company talks about how there is a fascinating way that your brain makes space to build new and stronger connections so you can learn more.
Using the analogy of a garden & how what you tend to grows, it explains again how important sleep is for us.
“Imagine your brain is a garden, except instead of growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables, you grow synaptic connections between neurons. These are the connections that neurotransmitters like dopamine, seratonin, and others travel across.
“Glial cells” are the gardeners of your brain–they act to speed up signals between certain neurons. But other glial cells are the waste removers, pulling up weeds, killing pests, raking up dead leaves. Your brain’s pruning gardeners are called “microglial cells.” They prune your synaptic connections. The question is, how do they know which ones to prune?
Researchers are just starting to unravel this mystery, but what they do know is the synaptic connections that get used less get marked by a protein, C1q (as well as others). When the microglial cells detect that mark, they bond to the protein and destroy–or prune–the synapse.
This is how your brain makes the physical space for you to build new and stronger connections so you can learn more.”
