10 December 2021 | Issue 37
As we head into another week, I take great pleasure in sharing my curated articles, tips & tools in a short read that will hopefully give you a few ‘aha’ moments as well as some laughter or joy. Most of all I hope it gives you pragmatic inspiration & helps you on your journey to doing what you love, with people you love, making a huge difference, being compensated appropriately with time to pursue other passions – #TheEOSLife.
Here’s this week’s business tip, life hack & find of the week… Some of them are original, most are things I have come across in my weekly pursuit of self-improvement & living a better life, through creating a better business. And don’t forget the inspirational quote, which you can download as a wallpaper or lock screen for your phone.
As always, if you find great things that you’d like to share then feel free to email me for inclusion in one of my weekly newsletters. I’m always looking for new & exciting things to share each week. And if you think someone else would like to receive the newsletter in their inbox, directly from my inbox (no newsletter apps used here!) then please let me know – firstname.lastname@example.org
So, how are those shoulders? When we’re stressed out, overwhelmed etc our body tends to compensate & we see it in many different ways.
This article talks about how stressed out business owners have distracted minds, listless stares, and traces of coping mechanisms following them around (like smoke, booze, or caffeine). But one more thing they usually have: shoulders firmly smashed up into their ears.
I think I have definitely been guilty of this.
So, if this is you, or someone you know, why are you (or they) trying to do everything?
“Owners may need reminding that they hired incredibly talented people to do a job. They wouldn’t have hired them if they weren’t capable, right? That means they shouldn’t have to do their jobs, too.”
Learn how to let go here… And let’s get those shoulders dropped!
Conflict is necessary – so how do you stop it getting nasty?
The Four Horsemen: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling.
I first learned about this tool when I had relationship counselling many years ago & since then I have used it many times as well as just recently pulling it out with a leadership team who had some serious issues going on.
It comes from Gottman & he says that he can observe a couple & within 5 minutes tell you whether or not they are going to end up being divorced.
“Over 40 years of research with thousands of couples has proven a simple fact: successful couples manage conflict by avoiding the Four Horsemen.”
So what is it all about?
“The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a metaphor depicting the end of times in the New Testament. They describe conquest, war, hunger, and death respectively. We use this metaphor to describe communication styles that, according to our research, can predict the end of a relationship.”
Research shows that it’s not the appearance of conflict, but rather how it’s managed that predicts the success or failure of a relationship. They say “manage” conflict rather than “resolve,” because relationship conflict is natural and has functional, positive aspects that provide opportunities for growth and understanding.
So, yes it will potentially save your marriage but it can also be helpful for when your leadership team is having issues.
This great article has a video, descriptions of the 4 horsemen traits & a link to the antidotes.
